Each week I’m featuring one of my policy topics. This week, I want to talk about the environment. Climate change is an existential threat that deserves a bold and rapid response. Click here to read my policy proposal to reduce carbon emissions, incentivize green energy and green building, and ensure Seattle is a national leader on the climate crisis.
It’s time for a voice in City Hall who welcomes input, shows up and listens, and gets results for all of us.

Between events tonight I had several great conversations with voters at the doors. And then we got to this door. Such a beautiful green door (campaign colors!). But alas no one was home. We will keep trying. We have already knocked on over 20,000 doors in our campaign. I want to speak with as many voters in D3 as possible. Forgive my bias for green doors. #eganforseattle #greenmeansgo ...

Councilmember Sawant's proposed rent control plan – released six weeks before the election after six years of talking about it – is unworkable. Not only is it illegal under state law, but it's also not a solution to the issues at hand. At a time where we need thousands of new housing units, this plan would effectively reduce private development to zero.
I've proposed immediate and long term solutions to address our affordable housing crisis, including bold and evidence-backed rent stabilization measures. And, not only are my proposals ambitious, but they're also realistic – we could actually get them done without punishing renters, small landlords, and private developers. On the City Council, I'll build coalitions across government and with nonprofits, renters, and developers to fight for real, meaningful efforts to address housing affordability. ...

That is the most solid statement of the entire election season. Thanks for being so clear.
Research shows that rent control has not been effective in the past - in fact, it has hindered and perpetuated injustice to housing for people of color. Examine the research on red lining - there are remarkable comparisons.
Gad I read this proposal. She really thinks an owner will tear down an old rental, rebuild or remodel, pay high construction costs and then turn around and charge the SAME RENT as for the old place? Hello? What planet? Hello? Goodbye!
Complete conflation of her campaign and her office. The policy is illegal under state law and the vote isn’t even close to overturn it. She’s selling snake oil in the hopes of it getting her elected.
Go Egan. Correct ...rent control never works...in fact does the opposite. NoWant SaWant.
Make her go away! If only I could vote for you!
Hope my tenants read this. Good analysis. Guess I will race to raise rents to the max. Thanks SaWant. Give HER a call. Bj Hargrove, Tara Hardy,
I want her out!
Thanks for sharing this. It's terrible politics under guise of policy. Would love to read more about your proposals as well, Egan - can you link them here?
Everywhere where rent control has been implemented, it has failed. Unintended consequences eventually emerge.

It's almost like she wants people to be homeless and miserable.
Egan - Rent stabilization as you describe it is the same thing as rent control. The only way it wouldn't be is if you were proposing direct subsidies to lower income tenants and called it rent stabilization. Capping rent increases at 7% assumes all landlords are charging the maximum possible rent and shouldn't jack it up much more than some percentage that sounds fair. So I ask you - What about the landlords who've been charging below market rent knowing that they could catch up if expenses crept up higher? There's never any "catch up" provision for those of us who charge below market rent. 7% of $1000 (what my basement rents for) is $70 bucks. That's about 60% of my property tax increase. It also wouldn't cover the increase in utilities, and would leave nothing for maintenance. It would not be "fair" to lock that in suddenly when we've been doing the right thing all along but may need to respond to a sudden repair, tax increase, or other cost that's beyond our control after being favorable to our tenants for so many years. I'm already managing the property myself and we handle maintenance ourselves with a contractor friend who gives us a price break because of friendship. Our rental is well maintained and we are good landlords. All of that savings gets passed on to our tenants right now, but we don't have a lot of cushion to cut into. We're the folks who would be pushed out of the rental market if rents were capped. Please consider talking with actual landlords, citywide and in your district, after the election before passing this type of measure. There are other policies that would more specifically target lower income or people of color that would not negatively impact housing starts, greater density, or rental supply.

Had a great time canvassing in the Central District today! While walking down the street I met Ray and Tara, and their boys Michael and Calvin. As young parents they’re concerned about the poor sidewalk infrastructure in their neighborhood. Tara’s mom recently hurt herself as a result of it and their oldest son Calvin is scared of big bumps when in his stroller.
While we have many big issues that we need to tackle as a city, hyperlocal issues such as this one should not be going by the wayside. Poor street infrastructure is not just a safety issue but one of accessibility. Everyone should be able to travel around our city safely! ...

The past month has been a wonderful time celebrating pride alongside our vibrant LGBTQ+ community in Seattle. It is a true joy to live in a place where love is celebrated, and the pride parade has always been a demonstration of that. Huge thank you to Chris Peguero for inviting me to walk in his contingency alongside the other queer City council candidates in this year’s parade! I am so grateful for all of you who walked with me yesterday to support and spread awareness of my city council campaign for District 3, a campaign that prioritizes love and encourages others to do the same. 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈 ...

#TBT to protesting in front of the Supreme Court to advocate for same sex marriage. One way I’ve demonstrated my #pride and pursuit for LGBTQ+ rights is by volunteering with and fundraising for the campaign to pass Washington Referendum 74 for marriage equality. I will always remember the incredible day when love got legalized, but the fight is far from over! As city council member for District 3, I will continue to fight for the expansion of rights and representation for everyone in our vibrant, unique community. ...

In celebration of PrideFest coming up this weekend (woohoo!):
.
Meet Shegan, my first drag alter-ego, first introduced to Seattle over Memorial Day Weekend at one of PrideFest’s iconic events, the Red Dress Party — an annual fundraiser that raises tens of thousands each year for HIV/AIDS charities. I’d never done drag before, but in my 15 year history as an LGBTQ community leader, I’ve shown that I’ll go to great lengths to advocate for my community.
In 2007, I made sure we didn’t have a parade to nowhere by resurrecting the festival and growing it into one of the largest and most beautiful Pride events in the nation.
.
I raised nearly $15000 for Referendum 74 to extend marriage rights in Washington State to same sex couples.
.
I’ve raised tens of thousands of dollars to support queer and trans non profits, including support from day one for Trans Pride Seattle.
.
In the early 90s, I showed up on Capitol Hill to find my people. Now I’m part of the welcoming committee and while it’s safer than it’s been, a sharp spike in hate crimes has shown us the work is far from done.
.
On council, I will continue to fight for queer and trans people.
.
So Happy #pride to one and all. Let’s watch out for each other. This beautiful, diverse extended family has given me so much and I vow to continue to fight for each and every one of you. ...

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Campaign Kickoff yesterday! Grateful for the opportunity to share my vision for innovation, accountability, and pragmatic solutions for the very real challenges our city faces. I’m running because I’m frustrated with our current Seattle City Council’s inaction.
